Higher Education Technology Transformation Task Force

It’s sort of funny that I introduced the “Dusty Shelf Award” for studies and reports that sit on the shelf and collect dust–and then turn around the next day and kick off a study and report project! At least I admit to the irony with a little humor.
House Bill 1946 was my second of two bills that I sponsored and passed in my first year in the Legislature. The goal is to transform the use of technology in higher education and design a strategy.
Today I met at Pierce College with about 20 extremely thoughtful, insightful and genuine technology/faculty/administration leaders from the two and four year institutions of higher education in our state. We had a kick off meeting to map out the action plan and set the stage for the (hopefully) bold implementation of the Legislation. I’m disappointed that it took so long to get to the kick off, but I’m pleased we’re on our way.
We have three customer segments: Students, faculty and administrators. My vision is that we can unleash their passion for teaching and learning by providing world-class, 21st Century, web-based, open interface, flexible, application-friendly solutions at a great price. The technology is just one piece…the business process, governance and people side are the real deal issues.
The real vision, of course, is to educate more people to higher levels. To unleash the spirit of an educated workforce with engaged citizens. To connect people to access to opportunity in a way that is real and meaningful. To help people get a job they love. To help people learn to love art, music, culture, finance and every other area of life. To treasure knowledge. To open the door to learning to those whom we are leaving behind. To compete on all levels in our global community.
Passing a bill in Olympia is only one part of being an effective legislator. Helping to engage the institution of government, learn from those who have come before, and empower teams to succeed is the magic key of success. That transcends both the public and private sectors.
In government as in business, life and love, it’s all about relationships.
I can’t guarantee that this report will answer every question or solve every problem. But I can assure you that it will never win the Dusty Shelf Award!
