The pain of higher education funding
Once again we see the destructive effects of the budget crisis in state governments nationwide. Bob Herbert’s New York Times column is not unique, of course, but it is particularly unpleasant as it relates to the University of Washington as our state’s flagship institution of higher education.
We all know that higher education is frequently called the state’s “savings account” because the Legislature withdraws money when we’re broke. We all know that the draconian impact of these cuts on the University of Washington will take years to overcome. We all know that we need a new approach to how we fund higher education in our state.
We all know that Cal Berkeley, the UW, and institutions nationwide are taking a body blow during this severe reduction in state government funding.
We all know it but we all seem equally as paralyzed about making a change.
