Lazy parents and lazy governments lead to lazy kids

CNN’s lead story this morning is about the ticking time bomb of obesity in kids. I’ve blogged about this issue here, where a fantastic but untouched state report earned my coveted “Dusty Shelf Award.”
The economic, social, policy and health impact of escalating childhood obesity will be with us for generations. We are setting ourselves up for a massive fall in terms of poor health outcomes for our kids. One recent study found that obesity directly leads to 100,000 cancer cases a year alone.
We parents are too lazy to kick our kids off the computer and throw them out the door to “go play!”
Government is a lazy guardian of our school nutrition programs. School districts are too lazy to make kids walk and ride their bikes to school.
This is one area where government’s laziness about tackling bold systems change–even though parents are a big part of the problem–will eventually bring horrific costs to society.
We deserve a good kick in the tush.
